How the gold rate in Saudi Arabia is calculated

Gold trades worldwide in US dollars per troy ounce. To get a local price we convert that one number, step by step, using today's values:

Price per gram = spot (USD/oz) × USD→SAR ÷ 31.1035 × purity

  1. Spot gold is $3,944.78 per troy ounce.
  2. Convert to Saudi riyals at today's reference exchange rate: SAR 14,793 per ounce.
  3. Divide by 31.1035 grams in a troy ounce: SAR 475.60 per gram of pure (24K) gold.
  4. Multiply by purity: 22K is 22 ÷ 24 = 0.9167, so 22K is SAR 435.97 per gram.
  5. For 10 grams, multiply by 10: 24K is SAR 4,756 per 10 g.

The same steps give every cell in the table. Because 24K is valued here as 100% gold, real 24K bars (999.9) and 22K jewellery can be a fraction lower in pure gold content than this calculation assumes.

21K is the Saudi standard

In Saudi Arabia the most common jewellery karat is 21K (87.5% gold), so shops in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam usually quote the 21K gram price first. 18K is used for lighter and diamond-set pieces, and 24K for bars and coins.

The Saudi riyal has been pegged to the US dollar at 3.75 since 1986, so the riyal price of gold moves with the international price. The exchange rate adds almost nothing to the daily change.

VAT and making charges

Jewellery in Saudi Arabia is sold at the gram price plus a making charge (المصنعية) per gram, and 15% VAT applies to jewellery. Investment gold of high purity can be treated differently for VAT, so ask the seller how VAT is applied before you pay.

When you sell jewellery back, shops pay on the weight and karat after testing and normally deduct a small amount; the making charge you paid is not returned. Comparing the shop's buying price with the 21K figure here shows how much of a margin is being taken.

Frequently asked questions

What is the 21K gold price in Saudi Arabia today?

This page shows the 21K price per gram in riyals, with 24K, 22K and 18K, worked out from the live international price at the fixed rate of 3.75 riyals per dollar. Shops add making charges and VAT on jewellery.

Why is 21K so common in Saudi Arabia?

21K (87.5% gold) gives a rich colour while being harder than 24K, so it has long been the standard for jewellery in Saudi Arabia and much of the Gulf.

Is VAT charged on gold in Saudi Arabia?

15% VAT applies to gold jewellery. Investment gold of high purity can be treated differently. Rules can change, so confirm with the seller at the time you buy.

Does the riyal exchange rate change the gold price?

Very little. The riyal is pegged to the US dollar at 3.75, so almost all of the change in the riyal price comes from the international gold price.

Is this a buy or sell recommendation?

No. It is educational information about how the international price converts into riyals. It is not advice to buy, sell or hold gold.
