How the gold rate in India is calculated
Gold trades worldwide in US dollars per troy ounce. To get a local price we convert that one number, step by step, using today's values:
Convert to Indian rupees at today's reference exchange rate: ₹3,75,080 per ounce.
Divide by 31.1035 grams in a troy ounce: ₹12,059 per gram of pure (24K) gold.
Multiply by purity: 22K is 22 ÷ 24 = 0.9167, so 22K is ₹11,054 per gram.
For a tola, multiply the gram price by 11.6638: 24K is ₹1,40,655 per tola.
The same steps give every cell in the table. Because 24K is valued here as 100% gold, real 24K bars (999.9) and 22K jewellery can be a fraction lower in pure gold content than this calculation assumes.
Why the rate in India is higher than the converted price
The figures on this page are the international value in rupees. Gold bought in India also carries import duty and GST, and jewellers add a making charge on top, which is also taxed. So the price on a jeweller's board in Mumbai, Delhi or Chennai is normally higher than the converted price here, and it can vary a little from city to city because of local costs.
India quotes gold per 10 grams, and newspapers usually show 24K and 22K side by side. The tola (11.6638 g) is still used informally in many markets, so it is in the table too.
22K, 24K and the BIS hallmark
Most Indian jewellery is 22K, marked 22K916 under BIS hallmarking (91.6% gold). 18K is marked 18K750 and is common in diamond jewellery. 24K is mostly bought as coins and bars. Hallmarked pieces also carry a six-character HUID code you can check before you buy.
Because the rupee floats against the dollar, the rupee price of gold moves with two things: the international gold price and the USD/INR rate. On some days gold is flat in dollars but up in rupees because the rupee weakened.

Frequently asked questions
What is the 24K gold rate in India today per 10 grams?
This page shows the 24K, 22K, 21K and 18K price per 10 grams and per gram, converted from the live international gold price at today's dollar-rupee rate. It is the value before import duty, GST and making charges, so jewellers' prices are higher.
Why is the jeweller's price higher than this rate?
Gold sold in India includes import duty and GST, and jewellers add a making charge that is also taxed. Local costs make city rates differ a little. This page shows the plain international value in rupees.
What does 22K916 mean on jewellery?
It is the BIS hallmark for 22-karat gold: 916 means 91.6% pure gold. 18K jewellery is marked 18K750 (75%).
Why did gold rise in rupees when it fell in dollars?
The rupee price depends on the gold price and on the USD/INR rate. If the rupee weakens enough, gold can rise in rupees even when the dollar price dips.
