How the gold rate in Pakistan is calculated

Gold trades worldwide in US dollars per troy ounce. To get a local price we convert that one number, step by step, using today's values:

Price per gram = spot (USD/oz) × USD→PKR ÷ 31.1035 × purity

  1. Spot gold is $3,944.78 per troy ounce.
  2. Convert to Pakistani rupees at today's reference exchange rate: Rs 1,091,653 per ounce.
  3. Divide by 31.1035 grams in a troy ounce: Rs 35,097 per gram of pure (24K) gold.
  4. Multiply by purity: 22K is 22 ÷ 24 = 0.9167, so 22K is Rs 32,173 per gram.
  5. For a tola, multiply the gram price by 11.6638: 24K is Rs 409,369 per tola.

The same steps give every cell in the table. Because 24K is valued here as 100% gold, real 24K bars (999.9) and 22K jewellery can be a fraction lower in pure gold content than this calculation assumes.

The tola and the sarafa rate

In Pakistan gold is priced by the tola. One tola is 11.6638 grams, so a 10-gram price is always a little lower than the tola price. Jewellers and the evening news usually quote 24K per tola first, then 22K and 21K.

Each day the jewellers' associations in Karachi, Lahore and other cities announce a sarafa rate for the bazaars. It starts from the same international gold price you see on this page, but it is set in rupees at the bazaar's own dollar rate and it can carry a premium or a discount when local demand, imports or the rupee are under pressure. That is why the sarafa tola rate and the converted international rate are rarely identical.

Most jewellery sold in Pakistan is 22K (about 91.7% gold) or 21K (87.5%). 24K is mainly bought as bars and biscuits for saving. When you sell old jewellery, shops normally pay on the gold weight after testing its purity, and they do not pay back the making charge.

Gold and zakat (nisab)

Many families check the gold rate before working out zakat. The figure most often quoted for the gold nisab is 7.5 tola (about 87.48 grams). At today's converted 24K rate, 7.5 tola is worth Rs 3,070,270.

This is the international price only. Scholars differ on details such as whether to use the gold or silver nisab and how to value jewellery you wear, so ask a scholar you trust before you calculate what you owe.

What is the gold rate today in Pakistan per tola?

Why is the sarafa rate different from this rate?
