Gold Trading Sessions and Killzones in Pakistan, UK and US Time

Gold trades almost 24 hours a day, but it does not move the same way all day. Knowing which session is open explains a lot of price behaviour.

Gold (XAUUSD) trades from Monday morning in Asia to Friday evening in New York, with a short daily break. Activity is not spread evenly. Most of the volume, and most of the large moves, happen when London and New York are open.

Session times (northern winter, November to March)

From early November to mid-March, the UK and US are on standard time. Pakistan does not use daylight saving, so PKT stays at UTC+5 all year.

In the northern summer (late March to early November), London and New York move one hour earlier in UTC and in Pakistan time. For example, the London open becomes 12:00 PKT and the New York open 17:00 PKT. Check the offset again each March and November when the clocks change.

How gold usually behaves in each session

Asia

Often the quietest session for gold. Price tends to build a range. The high and low of that range become liquidity for later sessions.

London

Volume increases sharply at the London open. A common pattern is a move through one side of the Asian range, sometimes a liquidity sweep, before the real direction of the day appears.

New York

US economic data (CPI, NFP, retail sales, Fed speeches) is released during New York hours, so this session often brings the largest moves of the day. The overlap with London is usually the most active window.

Asia builds a range, London often sweeps one side of it, and New York delivers the larger move. It is a tendency, not a rule.
A tendency is not a rule. Asia can trend and London can stay flat, especially before big US data. Use sessions to understand context, not as a trade signal by themselves.

What traders mean by "killzones"

"Killzone" is an ICT term for the windows where institutional activity, and therefore the best moves, tend to appear: mainly the London open and the New York open, plus the London–New York overlap. In Pakistan time during winter, that is roughly 12:00–15:00 for the London open window and 17:30–20:30 for the New York open window.

Our method uses sessions mostly for timing. We take direction from H4 structure, mark the order block, and then look for the M15 confirmation when price reaches the zone during an active session. See the full model in order blocks and liquidity sweeps.

A practical daily routine in Pakistan time

Here is a simple routine for traders in Pakistan during the winter months, built around the sessions instead of watching charts all day.

  • Morning (before 12:00 PKT): check the economic calendar for US events, review the H4 chart, mark the previous day high and low and the Asian session range. Decide your bias for the day from H4 structure.
  • London open window (about 12:00–15:00 PKT): watch for a sweep of the Asian high or low and any change of character on H4 or H1. Many days show their first real intention here.
  • Before New York (about 17:00 PKT): check whether any US data is due at 18:30 PKT, the typical release time for CPI, NFP and retail sales in winter. Avoid opening new trades a few minutes before.
  • New York open and overlap (about 18:00–22:00 PKT): the most active window. If price reaches your H4 order block here and M15 confirms, this is often where the cleanest entries appear.
  • After 22:00 PKT: London has closed and liquidity usually drops. Manage open trades rather than starting new ones.

For traders in the UK and US

In the UK, the London open is the start of the working day, so the routine is easier: prepare before 08:00, trade the London open and the overlap from 13:00 to 17:00. In New York, the overlap runs from 08:00 to 12:00 local time, and US data usually lands at 08:30. Traders on the US west coast face early mornings: the overlap is 05:00 to 09:00 Pacific time.

News times worth knowing

Most high-impact US data for gold is released at 08:30 New York time: CPI, PPI, NFP, retail sales and weekly jobless claims. In winter, that is 13:30 UTC and 18:30 PKT; in summer it is 12:30 UTC and 17:30 PKT. FOMC rate decisions come at 14:00 New York time, which is late evening in Pakistan. Spreads widen and price can jump tens of dollars in seconds around these times, so most disciplined traders either step aside or reduce size.

Practical tips

  • Mark the Asian high and low before London opens. They are common liquidity targets.
  • Check the economic calendar every morning for high-impact US news.
  • Avoid new entries in the minutes right before major data.
  • Friday afternoon in New York can be thin and erratic as traders close positions.
  • Remember the clock change: UK and US clocks move on different dates in March and October/November, so for a week or two the gap between them is different.

Key takeaways

  • Pakistan stays on UTC+5 all year; London and New York times in PKT shift with their clocks.
  • Winter overlap: 18:00–22:00 PKT, usually the most active window.
  • Asia often ranges; London often sweeps that range; New York brings the big data.
  • Sessions give context and timing, not trade signals.

Frequently asked questions

What time does the gold market open in Pakistan?

The trading week opens on Monday morning Asia time, which is around 03:00–04:00 PKT depending on the broker and season.

Which session is best for trading gold?

The London–New York overlap, 18:00–22:00 PKT in winter, usually has the most volume and the biggest moves.

Does Pakistan change its clocks?

No. Pakistan stays on UTC+5 all year, so London and New York session times in PKT shift when the UK and US change their clocks.

Is the Asian session worth trading on gold?

It is usually quieter. Many traders use it to mark the range that London and New York may later sweep.
